University areas far from the city centre can often be a bit of a mystery when it comes to finding a decent place to eat – especially if you’re not familiar with the area. It’s not always easy to break away from the usual sandwich or salad routine. But the Bicocca University district offers a surprisingly varied selection of good options, whether you’re after a quick bite between lectures, a lunch break with colleagues, or even a more refined evening meal. In this article, you’ll find six different spots, each suited to different cuisines and occasions – plus a few personal tips on what to order from the menu. By the end, you’ll be well equipped to answer the age-old question: “Where shall we go for lunch?”
Trattoria Arlati
If you’re after a special and elegant setting for an intimate dinner, Trattoria Arlati is a must. This historic restaurant offers traditional Milanese cuisine and transports you back in time with its art-filled, music-inspired atmosphere. The menu features classic Milanese dishes, along with a few seasonal regional additions, depending on ingredient availability. A special mention goes to the risotto with ossobuco, served al salto rather than all’onda – a rare treat to find. Perfect for a romantic date or a family dinner out.

IUTA Bistrot
Located within the Hangar Bicocca complex, IUTA Bistrot reflects the industrial and design-focused style of the building it calls home. It offers bistro-style dining all day – from breakfast to lunch and through to aperitivo (from 6pm). The dining room features modern decor in line with the museum’s aesthetic, and there’s a large garden space outside – ideal for an alfresco aperitivo in warmer months or even for hosting corporate events. The menu includes a variety of main dishes, large salads, burgers, and a small but frequently changing selection of daily specials, all of top quality. If you’re thinking of taking your boss out for lunch, this is the place I’d recommend.

Fuorimano OTBP
Fuorimano is your reliable go-to for a solid lunch with colleagues – no unpleasant surprises here. The kitchen offers a daily-changing menu of pasta and main dishes, plus a great range of Neapolitan-style pizzas and artisan burgers.

The venue itself is a converted workshop, now transformed into a restaurant with various areas: the main industrial-style dining room decorated with vintage and upcycled furnishings, a garden, and a bright blue pool surrounded by a few tables (available only in spring and summer). There’s also a separate room that seats around 60 people, which can be booked for private events. At the weekend, they serve brunch (€25, 12–3pm).
For aperitivo, they serve a sharing platter for every two people, with mini burgers, pizzas, and other bites (depending on your drink choice, prices range from €15–€17). Fuorimano is also a top pick for graduation celebrations, thanks to the large space and youthful atmosphere.

Pescato e Mangiato
Fancy a seafood lunch for under €20? It’s not too good to be true at Pescato e Mangiato, a small restaurant located between Bicocca and Precotto. From Tuesday to Friday, they offer a budget-friendly lunchtime menu focused on fresh fish.
Alongside the standard à la carte options, they serve a daily selection of dishes available as a set (starter + main) or individually – perfect for workers looking for fresh fish on the go, without breaking the bank. The service is quick, but always friendly and welcoming. Ideal for a casual lunch, solo or with company – just make sure you book ahead!

Toast to Coast
Welcome to toast heaven – right here in Bicocca. Just a short walk from the university, Toast to Coast delivers full-on New York vibes, offering every imaginable variety of toast: from two or three-layer stacks to club sandwiches, rolls, and a huge choice of fillings (meat, fish, or veggie), all served with chips included in the price.
They also have great sharing options like nachos or “toast pizzas” (a square 325 cm² of thick, fluffy pizza) and some lighter dishes like steak slices, seared salmon, teriyaki chicken, salads, and poké bowls. Perfect for a tasty, budget-friendly lunch with friends or colleagues – or even a weekend brunch or after-work aperitivo.

Primevo
If you’re craving meat, Primevo is a guaranteed hit in Bicocca. The meat courses are the star of the show – whether it’s a tartare, steak, or Milanese cutlet, you won’t be disappointed. I haven’t personally tried the pasta dishes, but they look promising too.
This restaurant specialises in meat, and the quality really shines through. The wine list is also impressive. It’s a great option for a business lunch or a special dinner with friends or family. Worth keeping in mind for the holidays too – they have dedicated menus for Christmas and New Year’s.
