On my list of Japanese restaurants to try in Milan, Miyabi had been at the top for some time, celebrated for its authentic cuisine and the quality of its sushi. I finally had the chance to try it for lunch, and I’m telling you all about it here.

The location in the Monforte area
It took me a little while to find Miyabi, even though I had written down the address at Corso Monforte, 26. The reason? No flashy sign, no need to show off. A little gem to be discovered, and a clue as to what I would find inside: an elegant Japanese restaurant on two levels, with an open kitchen and minimalist-style furnishings.

Even though I arrived early (at 12.00), the staff had some difficulty seating me: the restaurant is often fully booked even at lunchtime, thanks to the many offices in the area and its perfect location for business lunches with important clients. Sitting next to the entrance, I heard the phone ringing constantly and often heard staff replying that bookings were already full for that day or time. In short, don’t do what I did — book in advance if you want to try Miyabi.
Miyabi’s menu and prices in Milan
Let’s get straight to the point: Miyabi is absolutely not a cheap restaurant, and spending €40 even at lunch is very easy. Is it worth it? In my opinion, yes — but let’s go step by step.

Chef Katsuhiko Ochiai is originally from Shizuoka, Japan, and began his career over 20 years ago, working in several well-known restaurants such as Roppongi Sushi Suzuki, Sushi Kikuchi and Nishiazabu Gonpachi.
The full menu can be consulted here. To give you an idea: eight uramaki cost between €8 and €20, a mixed chirashi costs €20, a temaki between €8 and €15, hot dishes such as yaki soba and yaki udon cost €12, and there are tasting menus starting from €48.

What I tried at Miyabi
I was really in the mood for sushi, so I tried salmon and avocado uramaki, salmon hosomaki, salmon nigiri and a double-salmon temaki. Everything was delicious, everything was incredibly fresh. The temaki (the cone), in particular, was an experience: one of the best things I have ever eaten in my life. I spent €36 (including water and cover charge).
Would I go back? Absolutely — but booking in advance this time!
