Milan is no longer just the city of a quick espresso and a brioche. In recent years, the culture of brunch and American-style breakfasts has taken over the city’s neighbourhoods, bringing with it the unmistakable scent of maple syrup and the crunch of fried bacon. Whether you’re looking for a cosy spot for a long coffee and a cookie or an international hotel to savour perfectly made French toasts, here’s our selection of unmissable places for a Stars-and-Stripes-style wake-up with a savoury breakfast in Milan.

Nowhere Coffee & Community, Milano

Don’t be fooled by the name: Nowhere is the “place” to be if you’re looking for a contemporary take on the American breakfast. Their Crumbled Scrambled Bomb, soft scrambled eggs served in a round brioche with crispy bacon (€12), is a real explosion of flavour. For those with a sweet tooth, try the Tonde ripiene (filled with gianduia, jam, or pistachio) or their spiced buns (I recommend the C4 Bun, a yeast dough flavoured with four spices starting with the letter C). There’s a wide vegan selection, both sweet and savoury. Here, Specialty Coffee is a religion (and it’s enjoyed without sugar!).

Metropolitan Coffee – step into Seattle or NY

If you’re after the authentic atmosphere of New York or Seattle coffee shops, Metropolitan Coffee in the Precotto area is a must-visit. Here, coffee takes centre stage in all its forms: from Caramel Macchiatos to the famous Frappuccinos topped with cream (around €5.50). Don’t miss their soft, giant Crumble Cookies (€3.50) and Cinnamon Rolls (€4.50), considered among the best in the city for their fluffy texture and generous glaze. It’s the perfect place for an energetic, youthful, and totally Instagrammable American breakfast.

Excelsior Hotel Gallia, international breakfast

If you’re looking for the atmosphere of a grand international hotel, a savoury breakfast at Excelsior Hotel Gallia is unbeatable. Their morning service offers American classics executed to perfection: from scrambled eggs with bacon to avocado toast with salmon, French Toasts, and pancakes with maple syrup (€12 à la carte). For the full experience, opt for the “Epicurean Breakfast”, which includes every type of sweet and savoury treat, from fried eggs with sausages to freshly made waffles, accompanied by your choice of coffee, including American coffee.

California Bakery – the perfect American breakfast in Milan

A true institution for American food in Milan. For a classic American breakfast, go straight for their Crispy Peanut Butter Pancakes with peanut butter, granola, and chocolate cream (€9), or the savoury version with eggs and crispy bacon (€12.50). If you prefer savoury options and want to feel like you’re in a real Manhattan diner, try their NY-style Bagel, filled with cream cheese, salmon, tomatoes, and capers (€14.50).

Mugs & Co. Cozy Cafe & Bakery, Milano East

In the Porta Vittoria area, Mugs & Co. will transport you straight to Brooklyn with its industrial style and typical American diner atmosphere. The menu is packed with options: an egg section, bagels, pancakes, and club sandwiches. They also offer various brunch menus valid every day of the week for all tastes (including vegan). Special mention goes to the giant filter coffee mugs, perfectly completing the experience.

All American Diner, all you can eat brunch

This is the spot that most faithfully captures the 1950s film image of an American diner. On Sundays, All American Diner offers an All You Can Eat Brunch Buffet (around €25–28, drinks included). There are no limits: scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, mini-burgers, freshly made pancakes, and a wide selection of cheesecakes and brownies. The red booth atmosphere is priceless.

Ofelé, Caffè & Coccole – American-style comfort

Ofelé on Via Savona is a small oasis of comfort and happiness, with baked goods and mountains of pancakes in every style (honey, Nutella, jam, berries, maple syrup… and more). You can also enjoy savoury versions or excellent artisanal bagels. It’s the perfect place for those seeking carefully selected ingredients in an intimate setting.

Fancytoast – super bread, California style

Born as a brunch spot inspired by California, Fancytoast is the only place in Milan offering the famous SuperBread, a one-inch-thick slice of toasted bread topped in any way you like (€5–15). Their free-refill American coffee formula (€3.50) is also very popular. They often run an All You Can Eat Pancake initiative (around €15), allowing you to order endless stacks of pancakes.
