“German cuisine is all about meat and potatoes with more meat and sauces – you won’t find anything vegetarian or vegan on your holiday in Germany, just accept it!”: a sentence we’ve all heard a thousand times, right? And yet I can assure you that finding veg options in Germany is actually quite easy, or at least I can guarantee it in Munich, where I’ve been living since 2021.
So many people here are vegetarian or vegan, or they limit their meat consumption (especially for Veganuary, the challenge of eating vegan every January), that every restaurant (even traditional German ones!) offers options suitable for those who eat veg. In this article, however, I’d like to talk specifically about 100% vegetarian places (to be honest, almost all of them are vegan!). Ready for this list of vegan and vegetarian bars and restaurants in Munich? Let’s get started!

Where to eat traditional Bavarian food if you’re vegan
Traditional Bavarian cuisine is not particularly vegan-friendly; usually, the recommended vegetarian option is Käsespätzle, meaning cheese dumplings. However, there are many places that offer dedicated veg options, such as vegan sausages.
There is a very popular vegan Bavarian restaurant called Bodhi. It’s located at Ligsalzstraße 23 and can be reached via underground lines U4 and U5, Schwanthalerhöhe stop. The location itself isn’t anything special; it resembles a pub, with wooden interiors and a relaxed atmosphere. I had the chance to try a few dishes with a vegan friend, who left absolutely delighted and satisfied. As an omnivore, I personally still prefer a “normal” restaurant or an Asian vegan restaurant.

Vegan pizza in Munich: where to eat it
If you’re travelling with someone who loves eating Italian food even outside Italy, you should consider having a pizza at Doctor Drooly or Pretty Pizza, two vegan pizzerias in Munich. I really like both, with a slight preference for Doctor Drooly.

Attention! Doctor Drooly only does takeaway and delivery (U3 U6 Goetheplatz), while Pretty Pizza has an actual sit-down restaurant in the university area. The only downside? If you’re over 25, you might feel a little old inside the venue.
Vegan Asian restaurants in Munich
Those who follow me on Instagram @serenafoodieinsider already know that I eat a lot of Asian food. So of course an Asian Vegan section couldn’t be missing from this list and… drum roll please… this is also where you’ll find my favourite vegan restaurant in Munich: Ahimsa.

Ahimsa is located at Sommerstraße 41 (U1 U2 Kolumbusplatz). It has such a beautiful design that it’s literally my phone background, and the menu is short and extremely enjoyable even for omnivores like me. I believe I’ve tried every single dish on the menu; my highlights are definitely the udon noodles and the bao trio. A true place close to my heart – I go back often.
Among other Asian vegan restaurants worth mentioning are Akimy (pictured) and Secret Garden, both in the city centre, and Padme Hum at Goetheplatz. Secret Garden is famous for its vegan sushi and is the favourite restaurant of many of my vegetarian friends – personally, it didn’t excite me too much, but I’m an omnivore, so maybe I’m not the best judge.

Vegan breakfast and brunch in Munich
I’m not vegan, but I am lactose intolerant, so over the years I’ve become something of an expert in vegan desserts. My absolute favourite place is Patisserie Sießl, a French-style pastry shop at Hiltenspergerstraße 15 (U2 Josephsplatz), which serves incredible single-portion desserts, amazing pistachio croissants, German sweets (especially during the Christmas period), and also makes customised cakes, including wedding cakes. The venue has two rooms and is quite spacious; the dominant colour is blush pink. You can also have lunch or brunch here. I’ve tried many desserts at Patisserie Sießl, and my absolute favourite is without a doubt the three-chocolate single-portion cake.

One of my favourite brunch spots in Munich is Emmi’s, which has several locations, all vegetarian (with most of the menu being vegan). As an omnivore, I absolutely love this vegan brunch. Highly recommended.
